Programme Notes
“Unfinished Symphony”. Was it really unfinished? There is much speculation as to its apparently incomplete state. In fewer than 32 years, Schubert came up with over 600 songs (lieder) in the romantic style, nine symphonies, several masses and operas, a resplendent body of chamber music and some exceptional works for the piano.
Popular tunes are always a treat. Rogers and Hamerstein’s The King and I is familiar to our audiences and we invite you to sing along with us as we play a medley of its songs. Also, two movie medlies will feature The Magnificent Seven and the theme song from “The Mission”.
Beethoven hasn’t been left out and we feature his Egmont Overture. It is said that Beethoven scratched out the dedication to Bonaparte when he crowned himself Emperor in 1804.
